The Myth of Knowing

A dangerous disease

A picture is worth a thousand words…

Taylor Swift is famous for her music,… and her posture. She of course has access to whatever physical training resources available worldwide and yet she continues to exhibit what will inevitably be a very painful body.

One of the things that contribute to the maintenance of this kind of pain-producing posture is the absence of an accurate perception of vertical posture. Often everyone in the room can see that there is gross asymmetry, but the person is unable to see it in the mirror. If this kind of “blindness” can occur in regard to weight in someone struggling with Anorexia or Bulimia, why not in regard to posture.

This is actually a widespread phenomenon.

Justin Bieber bad posture

Here is an old photo of Justin Bieber. Do you think Justin thinks his neck is sore because he hasn’t put enough time in at the gym? I don’t know either, but he might. He might even think his headaches come from his father’s side of the family. It’s hard to say because Justin won’t return my calls 😉

The bottom line is that the posture demonstrated in this picture is wreaking havoc on Justin’s back and neck, and it GUARANTEES bony degeneration over time. The human skeleton is simply not designed to function in that position. It is designed to be able to go into that position, but it’s not healthy for it to take up residence there. My crystal ball foretells that Justin will be suffering from a lot of back and neck problems if he doesn’t get his postural house in order. And NO… a steady diet of push-ups and abdominal crunches will NOT help this situation.

Is the real problem that his glutes “don’t fire”? Lord give me strength, don’t get me started on that topic, please!

I had a new patient in the clinic yesterday. An electrical engineer. A VERY smart guy. He had no idea why he has struggled with upper back, neck, and foot pain for years. It was nice that he didn’t waste any of our time together telling me what the problems were coming from, he didn’t know or pretend to know. The electrical engineer’s posture looked a lot like the photo of Justin shown above.  Both Taylor and Justin appear to stand with their hips too far forward. In this picture of Justin, it is not obvious but in others, I have seen it clearly.

Once your brain receives information from your nervous system that your hips are hyperextended it will react by pulling your head forward. Your body’s ability to navigate safely in your environment is dramatically impacted by your ability to keep your head on straight (or as straight as you can). So, by pulling your head forward you have minimized losses in your abilities to perceive your environment accurately (i.e. via your eyes and ears and their related functions), but mechanically you have sacrificed a lot. But, from a survival perspective, your body is willing to sacrifice some comfort for smaller losses in function.

The big problem is that you shouldn’t have to sacrifice either.

And over the years those small sacrifices in comfort can turn into BIG costs in comfort AND function. The kind that results in long term pain medication dependence and surgeries. I know this is sounding like a lot of doom and gloom, but I’m just telling you how it is. Do what you will with the info. And just to play Devil’s Advocate for a second… You might say, “Hey Dr. Gloom,… I mean, Geoff”

What about all the people walking around with horrible posture who don’t have any pain?

Yeah,… what about them? There are a ton of factors that contribute to your particular physical experience and posture is just one of them. In fact, a lot of elite athletes probably could not be world champions if they restricted themselves to “perfect posture”.

Michael Phelps bad posture

Remember Michael Phelps?

American former competitive swimmer and the most successful and most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 28 medals? A unique combination of physical characteristics (unusually long torso and arms and comparatively short legs, among other things) contributed to him being “made to swim” at a world-class level.

Massively developed lats may have helped him to move faster through the water than anyone in history but without a lot of specific care and attention his body will become a chronic back and shoulder pain factory! You see, it’s not only us mere mortals who need to train ourselves out of the path of chronic pain.

Here’s a picture from my personal collection that further illustrates the point:

1971 LA Dodgers

Here is a photo of the 1971 LA Dodgers during training camp. These are professional athletes! The closest player to us is demonstrating some really nasty, unprofessional-looking movement. It just goes to show that some people are able to perform at really high levels in spite of their bodies, not only because of them.

Below is one of my favourite photos of all-time. This image says all that needs to be said about exercise instruction and personal perception. These women are all being taught the same exercise by the same instructor. In spite of this the squat that each woman is demonstrating is her personal version of that pose. There isn’t a textbook version in sight, but they’re all producing the best version they can, in that moment.

Amazing!

Well, this has been fun. The take home message?

It’s NOT “don’t try this at home”.

Please DO try this at home,… just don’t try to navigate the long and winding road from where you’re at with your back pain to where you want to be. Don’t be duped by the Myth of Knowing!

It can be a long and frustrating path when you do it that way.

I’m here to help. Geoff knows backs 😉

Woman touching her knee joint
By Geoff Dakin April 4, 2022
"Most people who have chronic or recurring knee pain have a hip/pelvis alignment problem, a foot/ankle problem, or both." First-principles thinking involves breaking down a problem into its assumption-free, fundamental building blocks. In the chronic pain-elimination game, the following fundamental truths have served me well over the years: 1. The nervous system is paramount. 2. Malalignment of the skeleton adds stress to the neuromuscular system. 3. Postural malalignment can usually be reduced with the practice of appropriately prescribed corrective exercise.
Man stretching his body on the floor

I have found that most people will stretch as aggressively as their pain threshold will allow. However, there is this thing called the “Stretch Reflex.” In other words, stretch too hard and all you are doing is making yourself sore! All pain, no gain. Stretching "the wrong muscles"??? I can hear the gears turning in your head. "The wrong muscles" doesn't make any sense!

Although chronic back pain is the most common chronic pain problem worldwide, of course, it's not the only one. In my practice, I also help people struggling with foot pain, hip pain, shoulder pain, and many others! In fact, today I want to share with you my perspective on KNEE PAIN, one of the most common problems I'm asked about.

“Impossible” is usually an opinion, not a fact. Although you may’ve taken a very long and winding road to get relief from chronic pain, and you’ve probably even had experiences that suggest that solving your pain problems are “impossible” If you come to the clinic or work with me using video conferencing I can guide you through your rehab training even faster and easier!
Shower water falling

This morning I got thinking about something a patient said. She has felt “heard” and she is no longer fearful that she will be “forced to do things that cause undo pain". I put a lot of time, effort, and yes, thought, into making sure you’re getting the care your body needs, not what some system says you SHOULD need.
Man in disbelief
By Geoff Dakin February 18, 2022
I continue to see chronic pain problems being mismanaged and misunderstood. Or better said, mismanaged because they are misunderstood. Is it any wonder that people aren’t getting the help they need and instead end up relying on painkillers and surgeries to “solve” their problems?
Adult man laughing with his aging father
By Geoff Dakin August 26, 2021
With people living longer than ever before, more and more individuals find themselves sandwiched between caring for their children and caring for their aging parents. You may experience feelings of grief and loss, as you see your parents changing and the roles of your family shifting. You may also feel fearful and anxious about your parent’s mortality, and that gets you thinking about your own.

The body holds much of the information we need to function at our best, but too often we ignore its messages and plow ahead with what our minds tell us. Instead of asking our body what it wants, we go for the quick fill-up or the comfort food that may be the last thing we really need. So, what to do to give your body an equal say in how you use it?
Are You Taking Good Care Of Yourself
By Geoff Dakin May 25, 2021
In challenging times such as these, taking care of ourselves is more important than ever—yet it’s often the last thing on our minds. We all know the negative impact on our health that stress can have—so, let’s find some balance. Take this self-quiz to see how well you are taking care of yourself.
How to conquer your fears and empower yourself
By Geoff Dakin March 16, 2021
What many people fail to realize is that fear is nothing more than a conditioned response. It's a natural reaction to a frightening or unfamiliar situation. While it is usually automatic, there are things you can do to overcome it. Here are three…
